April Lockhart

April Lockhart was born on July 4, 1995. When she was in the seventh grade, she started playing the guitar as well as taking piano lessons which ignited her passion for writing songs. In April, when she was 12 years old, she composed her first single, Different. In her 14th year April was a big devotee of her time singing and writing songs. After a while, she began to go on trips with her dad and to write songs either in NY and LA. April added other themes to the tune "Take My Hand" to help her the friends she had who struggled with problems like peer pressure, disabilities, and even teenage suicide. Lockhart has her own fan base and is a lifestyle blogger with the popular Ilia Clean Beauty brand. She was born without a left hand and that makes her unique. But this isn't the only thing about her. Lockhart's Instagram page doesn't overlook her disability. It also doesn't make it a point to emphasize the issue. It's a message. The message is that we are more than our physical selves. Our identities are complicated and we contain many different dimensions. Lockhart talks through video from Nashville. "I don't want it to define my life. I'm not looking to be only recognized as an expert in disabilities. It doesn't impact my daily living. I continue to do my normal activities and have adjusted to my disabilities. However, it's a component of me and I feel it's important to talk about. Self-acceptance can be a marathon for a lifetime but Lockhart is an absolute inspiration for this aspect. Lockhart admits to having had periods where she was uncomfortable wearing certain clothing styles which showed her arms. She now wears any outfit she likes and uploads photos on Facebook with pride. For her, self-love is always a lengthy journey. It's a journey, I don't think you ever arrive. It's important to surround yourself with people who are able to identify and feel your heart.
